Jersey City Police Car

Over the last 48 hours, gunfire has echoed throughout the city with shootouts reported on the West Side and Greenville.

On the West Side, up to three men engaged in a shootout this afternoon according to a radio report.

At approximately 2 p.m. police were called to West Side and Oxford Avenues following the gunfire.

The street was closed off during the crime scene investigation.

There were no reported arrests.

RLS Media is reporting that Jersey City Police were also looking for suspects involved in a shooting on Saturday night.

According to the report, police were called to the 400 block of Ocean Avenue at approximately 8:30 p.m. after receiving a reports of shots fired.

There, police found multiple shell casings and an individual with a non-life threatening “graze” wound.

“The victim received treatment for the injury while police searched for a vehicle occupied by several suspects who began shooting at a man who returned gunfire at the car.”

The suspects remain at large.

Many cities around the country have experienced an increase in gun violence during and following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The extent of crime generally, and shootings in particular, in Jersey City is unknown. Without explanation, the Fulop administration stopped publishing monthly CompStat crime data in June of 2019.

On August 18, Mayor Fulop falsely claimed that the city shares all criminal data with the Jersey Journal and intimated that providing such information would be unduly burdensome.

However, many cities, including North Bergen (New Jersey), Atlanta (Georgia), and New York City provide weekly crime data to residents.
