HCCC Groundbreaking Ceremony

A groundbreaking ceremony for Hudson County Community College’s new Center for Student Success will take place at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, at 2 Enos Pl., Jersey City.
The new 11-story building will be multipurpose, and will have classrooms, offices, a gym, and a theater. Hudson County Executive Craig Guy says, “This project will serve thousands of students here at Hudson County Community College. The HCCC Center for Student Success will be the epicenter of study, creativity, activity, and collaboration between students and the surrounding communities.”

New Jersey City University’s Financial Problems

New Jersey Monitor reports that, this week, Andrés Acebo, the interim president of New Jersey City University, testified before the Legislature’s higher education committees on the institution’s financial problems. He was joined by Henry Amoroso, NJCU’s state-appointed fiscal monitor, and Brian Bridges, the state Higher Education Secretary. The school’s debt and capital needs amount to almost $300 million, and Amoroso testified that “significant financial intervention” would likely be needed to keep it operational as an independent institution.

512 Quantum Sound Loses Liquor Licence

Hudson County View reports that the bar 512 Quantum Sound in Jersey City Heights has had their liquor license revoked. The Alcoholic Beverage Control board approved the resolution, which cited multiple violent incidents. The venue continues to promote events on their instagram page.

Jersey City Ranked #29 Best City for Single Dads

A new list of “2024’s Best Cities for Single Dads” from LawnStarter has ranked Jersey City 29th in the nation, and first in New Jersey. Jersey City also ranked 5th for its Walk Score, but 151st for its Share of Uninsured Children.

Jersey City Ranked in Tap Water Survey

According to a survey from ITAMG.com on “Which U.S. Cities Have the Worst Tap Water, According to Travelers?” Jersey City ranked 71st, while New York City came in at second place. Newark, NJ ranked even lower than Jersey City, coming in at #199, meaning that its water is considered better quality.

Inflation

A new study on “Changes in Inflation by City” from WalletHub has ranked the Metropolitan Statistical Area of “New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA” ninth on its list of “Cities with the Biggest Inflation Problems.” The “Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI” area ranked first in the list, and “Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL” was at the bottom, with the smallest inflation problem.

Electric School Buses for NJ

A report from NJ Spotlight News highlights the recent effort to change the state’s fleet of school buses into electric, zero-emission vehicles. For example, bill A-1677 was recently advanced by the Assembly Education Committee, and would help make it easier for schools to buy or rent electric buses. EPA Regional Administrator Lisa F. Garcia said in a statement: “Protecting our kids by delivering more funding for clean school buses in New Jersey is not only protective of public health, but also another leap forward in the fight against climate change by reducing harmful diesel emissions.”
