Authorities have identified the man fatally shot last night near New Jersey City University.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez identified the victim as 24-year-old David Jones, killed by “an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body.”

The Jersey City Police Department received a report of shots fired in the area of Audubon Avenue and College Street just after 12:40 a.m. last night. The police reportedly found a weapon and multiple shell casings at the scene.

Jones was found at 1 College Street and taken to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 23-year-old Jersey City man was found nearby “with an apparent gunshot wound to an upper extremity.” He is being treated for an injury that is not considered life-threatening at this time. 

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating. Anyone with information is being asked to contact the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1345 or to leave an anonymous tip. All information will be kept confidential.
