Authorities have announced an arrest in the January fatal shooting of a 25-year-old Jersey City man in the Heights.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, Sylis Lopez of Union City was arrested today and charged in the death of Rafael Gomez.
Gomez was gunned down in the area of Summit Avenue and Poplar Street in Jersey City on January 29. Police encountered Gomez — with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso — after responding to a report of shots fired in the area at approximately 9:35 p.m.
Gomez was taken by emergency medical services to Jersey City Medical Center. He was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the torso and the manner of death to be homicide.
Lopez is charged with Murder as an Accomplice; Conspiracy to Commit Murder; Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and Possession of a Weapon. He was arrested at the Hudson County Correctional Facility today, where he is being detained on an unrelated matter.
