Two Jersey City men have been charged in a scheme to defraud an insurance company.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Insurance Fraud Unit has arrested Shelton Sutton, 36, and Kevin London, 36, on charges relating to falsified information they provided to Progressive Insurance in order to receive compensation for medical treatment.

Both men have been charged with one count of Insurance Fraud. Sutton was also charged with one count of Conspiracy to Commit Insurance Fraud.

According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on March 20, 2022, Sutton was involved in an auto collision in Jersey City while driving a Mercedes Benz owned by London. Sutton identified himself as London to law enforcement during the initial collision investigation.

London and Sutton both later sought medical treatment through a claim with Progressive Insurance. In their claims, London falsely identified himself as the driver and Sutton falsely reported being a passenger. Investigators later determined Sutton was the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the collision.

On Monday, Sutton was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City. London was arrested on February 2.

In recent years, Suarez’s office has brought several cases against people allegedly involved in similar cases of insurance fraud.
