Lewis Spears Jersey City

Lewis Spears made his run for the mayoralty of Jersey City official this afternoon, emerging from City Hall with a box of petitions and a broad smile.

“I believe together we can make Jersey City a place where every family can live safely and have opportunities to thrive,” said Spears standing with his young son, Beau, in one arm and his family crowded around him.

Last month, Hudson County View reported that Spears had filed an A-1 form with the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission. However, it wasn’t until today that Spears was ready to make an official announcement.

Asked what his top priorities would be if elected, Spears demurred. “We’re developing a policy platform, and I’ll have it to you in a couple of weeks.”

To get on the November ballot, Spears will need to collect 1,680 signed petitions by August 30.

Spears says he’s ready for the challenge. “We’re going to go door-to-door. We’re going to let everyone know that we’re here and that we’re ready to lead.”

In taking on two-term incumbent Steven Fulop, Spears will have his work cut out for him. The mayor has amassed a large war chest and received key endorsements, including that of the Hudson County Democratic Black Caucus.

Born and bred in Jersey City, Spears is the founder of Kismet of Kings, an organization dedicated to mentoring young men of color. Jersey City Times profiled Spears in June of last year. This is Spears’ first run for public office.
