On Thursday afternoon, police were searching for an individual involved in a shootout on Wilkinson Avenue in Greenville.

According to the Jersey Journal, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione confirmed that one of the two shooters, Kevin Dawkins, 35, was apprehended and charged with offenses including aggravated assault with a firearm, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

As a crowd assembled beyond the yellow police tape on the closed off street, a man who did not wish to give his name reported hearing approximately four gunshots.

For over an hour, police conducted a room to room search of 133 Wilkinson Avenue. The police reported that one of the shooters appeared to have escaped out the rear of the building onto Bayview Avenue.

Multiple shell casings were recovered in the vicinity of 135 Wilkinson.  Police also recovered clothing believed to belong to the shooter. Police are keeping the block closed while they process the crime scene.

There were no reported injuries.

In an incident Wednesday, a woman was reportedly shot after being caught in crossfire near the intersection of Garfield and Fulton Avenues. The shooting took place at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Information on the woman’s condition was not made available.

The mayor’s spokesperson did not return an email requesting comment.

Many cities around the country have experienced an increase in gun violence during and following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The extent of crime generally, and shootings in particular, in Jersey City is unknown. Without explanation, the Fulop administration stopped publishing monthly CompStat crime data in June of 2019.

On August 18, Mayor Fulop falsely claimed that the city shares all criminal data with the Jersey Journal and intimated that providing such information would be unduly burdensome.

However, many cities, including North Bergen (New Jersey), Atlanta (Georgia), and New York City provide weekly crime data to residents.
