A police car responding to a shootout in Bergen-Lafayette this afternoon hit a pedestrian on Jersey Avenue. Three men wanted in the shooting are at large.

According to radio reports, the sequence of events began with a shootout involving three men at 4:15 p.m. at the corner of Communipaw and Crescent Avenues. The men fled in a small black SUV.

Minutes later, a Mitsubishi Outlander matching the description, registered to an Oklahoma business, was found at 132 Manning Ave. Shell casings were seen on the floor of the passenger side.  Several police units were called in to investigate.

A police car responding to the shooting hit a pedestrian on the Jersey Avenue bridge leading to Liberty State Park. The pedestrian reportedly suffered a broken leg. Some traffic has been diverted.

There have been no reported injuries connected with the shootout. A police unit has been sent to Jersey City Medical Center to monitor for “walk-ins.”

Cities around the country have experienced a surge in gun violence over the last two years.

The extent of any increase in crime in Jersey City is unknown. The Fulop administration stopped publishing monthly CompStat data in June of 2019. No explanation was given.

New York City residents, in contrast, have access to fresh crime data, including shootings, from weekly CompStat reports posted on the city’s website.
