A man was shot in the leg tonight in front of 31 Martin Luther King Drive, between Wade Street and Warner Avenue. Later, a drive-by shooting took place in Bergen-Lafayette.

According to radio reports, the first shooting took place at approximately 7:57 p.m.

The victim was taken to Jersey City Medical Center in a green 2009 Honda Odyssey. The police are hoping to speak with the driver but do not believe that the van was used in the shooting.

The victim is currently receiving treatment. There was no indication that the wound was life-threatening.

A drive by shooting was reported approximately two hours later at the corner of Harmon Street and Randolph Avenue in Bergen Lafayette. There were no reported injuries.

Many cities around the country experienced an increase in gun violence during and following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The extent of crime generally, and shootings in particular, in Jersey City is unknown. Without explanation, the Fulop administration stopped publishing monthly CompStat crime data in June of 2019.

On August 18, Mayor Fulop falsely claimed that the city shares all criminal data with the Jersey Journal and intimated that providing such information would be unduly burdensome.

However, many cities, including North Bergen (New Jersey), Atlanta (Georgia), and New York City provide weekly crime data to residents.
