A Newark man was shot and killed last night at a violent intersection in Bergen-Lafayette.

According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, the HCPO Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating the fatal shooting of Kyle Howard, 34, that occurred in the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Forrest Street in Jersey City.

Police were called to the scene at 11:15 pm last night.

The intersection of Forrest Street and Martin Luther King Drive has been the site of several shootings this year.

On February 3, police responded to a report of shots fired at the intersection. Shell casings were found at the scene and the police “cease fire” unit was called in to investigate. Witnesses reported seeing a white car that may have been involved. No injuries were reported.

On April 13, a man was shot in there by an individual armed with a “long rifle with a high capacity drum.” It is believed that six to seven shots were fired. The victim suffered gunshot wounds to his chest.

On May 8, Reginald Williams, 32, of Jersey City was shot at the location. Williams died from his injuries on May 25.

Cities around the country have experienced a surge in gun violence over the last two years.

The extent of any increase in crime in Jersey City is unknown. The Fulop administration stopped publishing monthly CompStat data in June of 2019. No explanation was given.

New York City residents, in contrast, have access to fresh crime data, including shootings, from weekly CompStat reports posted on the city’s website.
