The man gunned down in the Heights last night has been identified by the Hudson County Prosecutor as Rafael Gomez, 25, of Jersey City.
The shooting took place in vicinity of 1143 Summit Avenue at approximately 9:35 p.m.
According to a contemporaneous radio report, Gomez, who had been shot in the back, “was bleeding pretty good” according to an officer on the scene.
Gomez was taken to Jersey City City Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He died a short time later.
Shell casings were discovered in front of 1146 and 1147 Summit Avenue.
An officer reported that witnesses saw “bits and pieces” of the incident.
A witness reported seeing a gray vehicle fleeing northbound on Summit Avenue.
Gomez’s killing would mark the second homicide of the year.
