A Newark man has been charged in last week’s crash that left a young woman dead.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit has charged 22-year-old Gabriel Melo with Death by Auto.
The crash took place at approximately 2 a.m. on August 1 in the westbound lane of Route 139, also known as the “covered roadway,” in the vicinity of routes 1 and 9.
Police responding to the scene found two vehicles — an extensively damaged 2018 Audi on its roof belonging to Melo and a tractor trailer.
Melo, along with two passengers, were taken to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. One of the passengers, Daniella Rosario, 21, of Bloomfield, was pronounced dead a short time later.
Melo was issued a summons by the Jersey City Police Department during the preliminary investigation.
Yesterday, Melo was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance, tentatively scheduled for September 13.
