A 22-year-old man was shot and killed last night in the area of Stegman Street and Martin Luther King Drive according to a tweet from The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. The HCPO and Jersey City Police Department are investigating. The victim was identified as Ahmad McPherson, of Jersey City.
The killing represents the 13th of the year, putting Jersey City on pace to equal or surpass 2009 and 2015, when the city logged 28 and 27 homicides respectively.
Prior to the pandemic, there were, on average, 21 homicides per year in Jersey City, dating back to 2007. However, like other cities, Jersey City has seen a spike in killings since the pandemic’s onset. Homicides in large cities are up by 24% this year.
