A Hudson County jury has convicted a Florida man in the February, 2021 killing of a Jersey City father of three.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, the jury convicted Ariel Dumit, 37, of Florida today on all counts for the shooting death of Christian Parra, 34, on February 28, 2021.
At approximately 8:18 p.m. that day, Jersey City Police responded to the BJ’s Parking Lot at 396 Marin Boulevard after receiving a report of a shooting. There, officers found Parra with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso.
He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide.
Parra was the father of three young children. Following his death, a GoFundMe page raised $26,200 for his family. Parra’s brother Eric Maldonado wrote “The life of a good man was taken in a moments notice. We will never understand or comprehend this ill fated action or ever forget this godforsaken day. As I sit here and write this, the only words I can express are my pain and suffering. The pain of losing a loved one is something I think everyone can relate to but the loss of my brother is devastating to me and my family.”
Dumit was found guilty of Murder; Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purposes and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
Dumit faces 30 years to life in New Jersey State Prison at sentencing, which is tentatively scheduled for July 13.
The verdict was delivered before Judge Carlo Abad following a two week trial. The State was represented in this matter by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutors Erica Bertuzzi and Luisa Florez.
