A Bayonne man was sentenced yesterday for his involvement in a fatal Bergen-Lafayette shooting.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, Judge Vincent J. Militello sentenced Bernard Wilson, 29, to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison for the 2020 shooting death of 38-year-old Abimael Fuentes.
Wilson had pleaded guilty to Aggravated Manslaughter on July 21.
On April 21, 2020, just after 10:30 p.m., police, responding to a report of shots fired, found Fuentes in the area of Brinkerhoff Street between Monticello Avenue and Bergen Avenue with a gunshot wound to the torso.
Fuentes was taken to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead later that night.
The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound and the “manner of death” to be homicide.
The State was represented by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Andrew Baginski. Said Baginski “The State thanks the court for its diligence in this matter to see that this defendant’s sentence will deter him from committing any additional violent crimes in our community.”
Wilson’s sentence is subject to the No Early Release Act.
