Crime Scene Tape

Authorities have released more information, including the name of the man fatally wounded, in last week’s police-involved shooting.

According to Acting Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, it was Joseph Robertson, 59, of Jersey City, who was shot and killed in the May 24 incident near the intersection of Communipaw Avenue and West Side Avenue.

The Jersey City Police Department had arrived on the scene at 11:56 p.m. in response to a 911 call of a domestic dispute involving a man with a gun. During the encounter, Officer Omar Polanco fired his service weapon, fatally wounding Robertson.

Though officers and emergency medical personnel rendered first aid to him, Robertson was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:19 a.m. A firearm was recovered near his body.

A woman, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

According to ABC News, two police officers were treated at Jersey City Medical Center for minor injuries.

The investigation is being conducted according to a requirement that the Attorney General’s Office conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity.
