Acting Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin has announced an investigation into last night’s fatal police-involved shooting.

According to the preliminary investigation, uniformed officers of the Jersey City Police Department responded to the intersection of Communipaw Avenue and West Side Avenue at approximately 11:56 p.m. in response to a 911 call of a domestic dispute involving a man with a gun.

During the encounter, one Jersey City officer fired his service weapon, fatally wounding the man. A firearm was recovered near the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:19 a.m. His identity is not being released at this time.

A woman, who has not been identified, is in critical condition.

According to ABC News, two police officers were treated at Jersey City Medical Center for minor injuries.

The investigation is being conducted according to a requirement that the Attorney General’s Office conduct the investigation of any death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity.
