Additional charges have been filed against a Newark man in connection with a fatal crash last month.

According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, the new charges were filed by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit against Gabriel Melo, 22.

Melo was driving his 2018 Audi on Route 139 — also known as the “covered roadway” — at approximately 2 a.m. on September 1, when he collided with a tractor trailer. His car overturned, killing one of his two passengers, Daniella Rosario, 21, of Bloomfield.

Melo was arrested on September 7 and charged with Death by Auto. He has now been charged with Aggravated Manslaughter, Reckless Manslaughter, and Assault by Auto Resulting in Bodily Injury.

He is currently being detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility.

The 53-year-old male driver of the tractor trailer, who remained at the scene, was not injured in the collision.
